Partial Hospitalization Program

There are various levels of care when it comes to addiction treatment.

Jump to Section

These levels of care vary based on the severity of a person’s addiction and the unique needs they have in order to achieve recovery. This is why we offer various types of addiction rehab programs. One of the outpatient treatment programs we offer is our partial hospitalization program.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

PHP Rehab is the perfect middle ground between residential & outpatient care

Partial Hospitalization allows patients to leave a facility once treatment has concluded for each day

PHP requires 5-8 Hours per day as well as 5-7 days per week

Partial hospitalization program (PHP) treatment is an outpatient rehab program that requires its patients to receive intensive treatment for approximately five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week. Because PHP treatment requires its patients to attend intensive alcohol and drug rehab essentially all day long, it is the most intensive form of outpatient rehabilitation.

Components of a PHP Treatment Program

Partial hospitalization programs may include the following services:

  • Drug screening
  • Group counseling
  • Individual counseling
  • Medication management
  • Treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders

Benefits of a Partial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program has many benefits. Some of these benefits are described below.

PHPs are Affordable
Another major benefit of a PHP is that it’s much more affordable than residential treatment. This is because PHP patients don’t have to pay for the added costs of using the amenities of rehab facilities overnight as their inpatient treatment counterparts do.
Patients Can Live in Their Own Homes
One major benefit of a partial hospitalization program is that it allows its patients to spend their evenings in the real world and their nights in their own residences near our facility in Maine. This is a huge benefit since the alternatives to PHP treatment, inpatient and residential treatment, require their patients to live in rehab facilities 24/7 while receiving care.

Thus, by attending a PHP, individuals get to reap the benefits of receiving highly intensive substance abuse treatment while still getting to live their own lives in the real world. In other words, PHP treatment is the best of both residential and outpatient rehabilitation.

Patients Receive Clinical and Medical Care
Because PHP treatment is the most intensive form of outpatient care, it offers its patients clinical care throughout the treatment sessions. By clinical care, we mean supervision by doctors and medical professionals.
Patients Get to Still Spend Time With Family and Friends
As an outpatient program in Maine, PHP patients get to live in their own homes and tend to their normal lives in-between treatment sessions. This means that PHP patients also get to continue spending time with their family and friends during the period of time that they are receiving care. This is a benefit that residential treatment patients do not have.
PHPs Can Help People Transition Out of Residential Programs
Because PHPs are the most intensive form of outpatient rehab, it is great to use them to transition from inpatient treatment to other less intensive forms of outpatient care for addiction.

Partial Hospitalization Program vs. Residential Program

The main difference between PHP care and inpatient care is that PHPs allow patients to live in their own homes and tend to their normal life responsibilities when not actively in alcohol and drug rehab sessions. Inpatient treatment, on the other hand, requires patients to live in rehab facilities 24/7 while receiving care and medical services.

Partial Hospitalization Program vs. Intensive Outpatient Program

Again, PHP is the most intensive form of outpatient rehab. The second most intensive form of outpatient rehab is an intensive outpatient program (IOP).

The key difference between partial hospitalization programs and IOPs is that PHPs require patients to attend rehab for many more hours than IOPs do. This is because intensive outpatient rehab only requires its patients to attend rehab for around three to four hours a day, a few days a week. PHPs, on the other hand, require patients to attend treatment for around five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week.

Partial Hospitalization Programs vs. Outpatient Programs

An outpatient treatment program (OP) is the least intensive form of outpatient rehab. As a result, it only requires its patients to attend rehab for around a couple of hours a day, once or twice a week. A PHP, on the other hand, is much more intensive and requires its patients to attend rehab for around five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week.

Who Benefits Most from Partial Hospitalization Programs?

Partial hospitalization programs can be effective for people who need an intensive level of care while still living outside of a rehabilitation facility. PHPs can also be helpful for individuals who need support while transitioning from an inpatient program to life outside of rehab.

This type of addiction treatment program can also be beneficial for individuals who have an addiction and a co-occurring mental health condition. A person who suffers from drug or alcohol abuse in addition to disorders such as bipolar disorder, anxiety, or depression can receive specialized care in a PHP.

Common Forms of Therapy Used in PHPs

Addiction treatment programs consist of different types of therapies. Some of the common forms of substance abuse therapy used in a partial hospitalization program include the following:
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy occurs one-on-one between a therapist and a patient. The purpose of individual therapy is to provide individuals with the time to deep dive and be introspective.

During the recovery process, it is essential for people to discover what their addiction triggers are. Through individual counseling, people can also then figure out what are the best ways to cope with their substance abuse triggers.

Group Therapy
Group therapy occurs between a therapist and multiple patients at the same time. The patients that attend group counseling usually suffer from the same types of issues. This type of counseling is beneficial because it allows rehab patients to learn from the triumphs and mistakes of their peers. Support groups also give people the opportunity to give one another advice and provide emotional support to others in recovery.
Family Therapy
Family therapy occurs between a group of family members and one therapist. The purpose of family counseling is to help resolve any issues that the person with a substance addiction has had with his or her family.

Family counseling also helps the families of recovering individuals better understand how they may have contributed to their loved one’s development of addiction. It also helps people learn what they can do to change those behaviors and be more supportive.

This form of therapy even helps the families of recovering individuals understand what suffering from addiction is like. That way, the families of those in addiction recovery will be better able to empathize with their loved ones.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
This is one of the most common types of therapies used in addiction and mental health treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on identifying people’s negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and then altering them into more positive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
In this form of counseling, people identify and accept their negative thoughts and emotions and change them to more positive ones. This is so that one’s negative thoughts and emotions don’t have the power to alter one’s behaviors.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
In this form of counseling, people identify and accept their negative thoughts and emotions and change them to more positive ones. This is so that one’s negative thoughts and emotions don’t have the power to alter one’s behaviors.
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) is used to help those in recovery recognize the irrational thoughts and behaviors that they have that often lead them to turn to alcohol or drug abuse.

Once people in alcohol and drug rehab recognize their harmful behaviors, they are able to alter them into more rational thoughts and behaviors. This will, in turn, make such people less likely to resort to alcohol or drug abuse.
